A FEW REASONS why WE EXIST:

*High Availability of Drugs To Our Youth:

*The Inappropriate Use of Prescription Drugs:
22 of the 28 WV Law Enforcement Agencies rated availability of diverted pharmaceuticals as being high.

*Adult Binge Drinking Problems:
Kanawha County adults report that they binge nearly 10% more than the average West Virginian.

*Disturbing Alcohol Use Among Our Youth:
Over 50% of 7th grade students in Kanawha County report they have drank beer within the last year. That number increases to over 57% for 10th grade students.

*Unacceptable Mortality Rates:
-Kanawha County's mortality rate that can be attributed to substance abuse is 73% higher than the state's average.
-Of the 295 overdose deaths in WV, 93.2% were a result of prescription pain medications.

WE make A DIFFERENCE BY:

*Maintaining an active coalition of over 40 partners that meet regularly to lead area wide initiatives to achieve our mission.

*Educating the public on substance abuse issues, treatment, and prevention by utilizing proven program models and working closely with existing agencies.

*Offering a variety of programs, presentations, events, and activities throughout Kanawha County in an effort to change behaviors and knowledge, as well as create a better understanding of the substance abuse issues facing our citizens.

*Collectively working on, submitting, and receiving grant funding that goes directly into the front-line efforts of reducing substance abuse problems that have been diminishing our quality of life in Kanawha County.
