Loved Ones Informational Meeting (see attached flyer for details)

May 24^th meeting is an introduction to Loved One’s with hopes that it will peak families interest in hosting a Loved One’s Group here in Kanawha County. It is a free series that helps families by educating them about actions they can take when interacting with their loved ones with an addiction that will help their loved one seek help earlier. Kanawha Communities That Care is bringing in Ed Hughes, with the Portsmouth Counseling Center to speak about the Loved Ones Group.

5th Bi-Annual Suicide Prevention Conference “Drugs, Alcohol, and Suicide Across the Life Span”
March 28 - 29, 2012

Our featured speaker will be Dr. Thomas Joiner.

THOMAS JOINER went to college at Princeton, and received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the
University of Texas at Austin. He is Distinguished Research Professor and The Bright-Burton
Professor in the Department of Psychology at Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL. Dr.
Joiner's work is on the psychology, neurobiology, and treatment of suicidal behavior and related
conditions. Author of over 395 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Joiner was awarded the Guggenheim
Fellowship and the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Residency Fellowship. He was elected Fellow of
the American Psychological Association, and received the Young Investigator Award from the National
Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, the Shakow Award for Early Career
Achievement from the Division of Clinical Psychology of the American Psychological Association, the
Shneidman Award for excellence in suicide research from the American Association of Suicidology,
and the Award for Distinguished Scientific Early Career Contributions from the American
Psychological Association, as well as research grants from the National Institute of Mental Health,
the Department of Defense, and various foundations.

Dr. Joiner is editor of the American Psychological Association's Clinician's Research Digest,
editor of the Journal of Social & Clinical Psychology, and Editor-in- Chief of the journal Suicide
& Life-Threatening Behavior, and he has authored or edited fifteen books, including Why People Die
By Suicide and Myths About Suicide, Largely in connection with Why People Die By Suicide, he has
made numerous radio, print, and television appearances, including write-ups in The Wall Street
Journal and The Times of London, and two appearances on the Dr. Phil Show.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all from the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free West Virginia. Thanks so much for your involvement and support in working towards a Tobacco-Free West Virginia. We have a busy year ahead of us and look forward to working with you all to reduce tobacco use, protect all from secondhand tobacco smoke and make WV a healthier state!

Reminders:

The Coalition for a Tobacco-Free West Virginia will be conducting weekly conference calls for tobacco control advocates in WV for the next few months. The purpose of these calls is to keep advocates updated on any state policy issues, share information about local, state and national tobacco-related issues and to continue building and strengthening the WV network of tobacco control advocates. These calls will be held at 9:00 a.m. on every Wednesday morning and will be approximately a half hour in duration. These weekly calls will start on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. All tobacco control advocates are invited to participate in this call. The toll-free call-in number is 1-866-610-7535, the PIN is 2066802#. Please call in 1-2 minutes before 9:00 so that we may start the call promptly at 9:00 and finish up by about 9:30 or earlier.

Tobacco-Free Day at the Capitol is scheduled for Friday, February 24, 2012. Watch your e-mail for more information and registration.
