It is a free series that helps families by educating them about actions they can take when interacting with their loved ones with an addiction that will help their loved one seek help earlier. Kanawha Communities That Care is bringing in Ed Hughes, with the Portsmouth Counseling Center to speak about the Loved Ones Group.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Our featured speaker will be Dr. Thomas Joiner.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
THOMAS JOINER went to college at Princeton, and received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the &lt;br /&gt;
University of Texas at Austin. He is Distinguished Research Professor and The Bright-Burton &lt;br /&gt;
Professor in the Department of Psychology at Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL. Dr. &lt;br /&gt;
Joiner's work is on the psychology, neurobiology, and treatment of suicidal behavior and related &lt;br /&gt;
conditions. Author of over 395 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Joiner was awarded the Guggenheim &lt;br /&gt;
Fellowship and the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Residency Fellowship. He was elected Fellow of &lt;br /&gt;
the American Psychological Association, and received the Young Investigator Award from the National &lt;br /&gt;
Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, the Shakow Award for Early Career &lt;br /&gt;
Achievement from the Division of Clinical Psychology of the American Psychological Association, the &lt;br /&gt;
Shneidman Award for excellence in suicide research from the American Association of Suicidology, &lt;br /&gt;
and the Award for Distinguished Scientific Early Career Contributions from the American &lt;br /&gt;
Psychological Association, as well as research grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, &lt;br /&gt;
the Department of Defense, and various foundations.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Dr. Joiner is editor of the American Psychological Association's Clinician's Research Digest, &lt;br /&gt;
editor of the Journal of Social &amp;amp; Clinical Psychology, and Editor-in- Chief of the journal Suicide &lt;br /&gt;
&amp;amp; Life-Threatening Behavior, and he has authored or edited fifteen books, including Why People Die &lt;br /&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Reminders:&amp;nbsp; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The&amp;nbsp; Coalition for a Tobacco-Free West Virginia will be conducting weekly conference calls for tobacco control advocates in WV for the next few months.&amp;nbsp; The purpose of these calls is to keep advocates updated on any state policy issues, share information about local, state and national tobacco-related issues and to continue building and strengthening the WV network of tobacco control advocates.&amp;nbsp; These calls will be held at 9:00 a.m. on every Wednesday morning and will be approximately a half hour in duration.
